Your senior portrait session is one of the most important photo shoots of your high school career. Whether you’re planning a session in Owatonna, Faribault, or anywhere in Southern Minnesota, a little preparation goes a long way toward getting images you’ll love for years to come.
Choose Your Locations in Advance
Southern Minnesota offers incredible variety — from the historic downtown Owatonna streets and the Cabela’s pond to open fields, barns, and lakeside settings. Think about what feels most like you. Do you love the outdoors? A golden hour field session might be perfect. Are you more of a downtown person? Urban backdrops with brick walls and murals create bold, editorial portraits.
Plan Your Outfits Carefully
Most seniors bring 2–4 outfit changes. Aim for variety — one casual, one dressy, one that represents a sport or hobby. Avoid busy patterns and logos that date quickly. Solid colors and simple textures photograph beautifully and keep the focus on you.
The Week Before Your Session
Get a haircut 1–2 weeks before (not the day before). Stay hydrated. Get a good night’s sleep. Avoid trying new skincare products that could cause breakouts. If you wear glasses, clean the lenses.
On the Day of Your Session
Eat a good meal before you arrive — low blood sugar makes people look tired in photos. Arrive 10–15 minutes early so you’re not rushed. Bring a small bag with touch-up items: lip balm, a brush or comb, and any props that are meaningful to you.
